Opens the new download window, so as to start new downloads.
Quick downloads...
Special mode where you simply browse the server and double-click on files to start the download immediatly.
Preferences...
Opens the preferences window. You should look into it at the first start of hotgrabber.
Reset windows position
Resets the windows to the default position. Please note that this position is for a resolution of 1024*768.
Preferences
This is where you set all preferences of hotgrabber.
Connection
This is important to select Non-PPP connection if you don't use a modem, because downloads won't start if you don't.
- Open PPP connection if needed : opens the PPP connection if it is closed or if it is dropped.
- Launch a file when PPP is up : launches a file when the PPP connection is established.
- Close PPP connection when all downloads are done... : closes PPP connection when all current downloads are finished.
- ... and shutdown the computer : shutdowns your mac aften having closed PPP.
- Number of retries : the number of times hotgrabber will try to download the file if the server does not respond (if it reboots, ...). Set it at "0" to disable this feature.
Options
- Sort downloads by servers : places the downloads in folders named from the address of the server they're from.
- Queue downloads from the same server : queue folders that are from the same servers, to avoid kick or ban. Downloads of different servers are made simultanously.
- Queue all downloads : queue all downloads, even if they're from different servers.
- Spot pincher : tries to d/l a file continuously if no spot is available. You can specify the delay between retries.
- Number of retries : the number of times hotgrabber will try to download the file if it has problems. Set it at "0" to disable this feature.
- Use multiple windows for browsing : opens a new window each time you doubleclick on a folder while browsing.
- Maximum folder depth : this is the maximum depth until the Search engine stops searching. This is to prevent infinite loops. Set it at "0" to disable this feature.
Location
- Download Zone : specify the interval where you want to download (usually late in the night, when Internet has the highest bandwidth).
- Download folder : if you choose to use the same as Hotline, hotgrabber will find your Hotline bookmarks.
Other
- Enable Remote Control : this turns on the Remote Control mode, so you control hotgrabber by messages from an Hotline server (see below for informations about Remote Control).
- Password : this is the password you need to enter in the messages to use the Remote Control.
- Use the HGBar : when hotgrabber goes in background, a bar like the control strip appear if this is selected, where you can control hotgrabber and see info and the downloads.
- Queue all downloads at opening : when HGrab is launched, it will queue all downloads that were downloading while HGrab was last quit. Disabling this option allows you to resume all your downloads after quitting/restarting HGrab (after a reboot, for example)
New download
This is where you start a new download, search and browse for files.
Location
Enter here the connection parameters.
Files
Drag in the listbox the files and folders you want to download.
- Files/Folders : Browse will open a window like the Files window of Hotline, Search will open another window designed to search files on the server. If a server has already been indexed, a file appears in the loupe.
Time
You can choose either to download the files now or later, or queue to files to download them another time.
- "Now" will download the files immediatly.
- "Inside the Download Zone" will download files only inside the DLZ (it will stop when it reaches the End time, and start again when the Start time is reached again).
- "At a custom date" lets you specify when you want to download your files.
- "Queue" will only add the file(s) to the list.
Download Manager
This is where you manage all your downloads. You can delete, modify, queue the download, as well as open and save bookmarks. You can apply an action to simultaneous files at the same time pressing shift and command. You can load bookmarks by double-clicking on them or drag them to the Download Manager from the Finder.
- Download/Queue : changes the status of the selected download respectively to download it now or to queue the current download.
- Modify : opens the download window so as you change change some infos of the download. Does not work on encoded bookmarks for security reasons.
- Delete : deletes the download. If it's currently downloading, it just stops it (I'll have to fix that).
- Load/Save : loads and saves bookmarks. You can also load a bookmark by dragging it in the Download Manager window. It'll prompt you for a password if it's crypted, and the name will be in italic, so as you can remember that this download can't be modified.
Search
This is where you search files inside a server, after having indexed it.
- Search : searches the text entered in the files indexed from the server.
- Index : creates an index of the server so as you can search inside it.
HGBar
This is a useful strip where you can check all downloads from every applications.
- Arrows : use these to toggle between the downloads.
- Buttons : explicit enough for the first 3, the last one switches to hotgrabber.
To move the HGBar, press down the option (alt) key and move it using the mouse.
Remote Control Help
Instructions
To use the Remote Control, you have to Enable Remote Control in the preferences, and then send messages to your hotgrabber client from Hotline Client to control it, using the following procedure :

Commands available
The character "/" means that the following has to be put in the line below (on the 'options' line).
- info : gives you all informations available about all downloads (queued, in progress, finished, ...).
- state : gives you the state of the current client (downloading, indexing, ...).
- disconnect : disconnects the current client.
- search/'texttosearch' : searches the files containing 'texttosearch'. The server has to be indexed first. This can't be done by message yet.
- newdl/'dlinfo' : starts a new download with the specified information. To get these information, you have to open a copy of hotgrabber, browse or search for the file(s) your want to download, and option-clic on Download (which should transform into Copy infos) to copy these information. Then, you simply have to paster this in your message.
- quit : quits hotgrabber.
